Kyle Freeland Had an Emotional Message for Rockies Fans Amid Historically Bad Season

It's not a good time to be a Colorado Rockies fan.

The Rockies own MLB's worst record through the first month-plus of the 2025 campaign, and quite frankly, it's not even close. The team has won just six games through its first 37 contests and owns a stunningly bad run differential of -109.

Colorado dropped both games of a doubleheader against the Detroit Tigers on Thursday, capping off a series sweep at Coors Field. They were outscored 21–3 throughout the two games.

Kyle Freeland, who drew the start for the first game and surrendered five runs and 11 hits across just three innings, got emotional when addressing the media after the loss. When asked about what he'd say to fans amid the team's historically woeful start to the season, he issued a heartbroken response.

"Keep believing in us," Freeland said, seemingly fighting back tears, before leaving the podium.

Freeland is one of the longest tenured players on Colorado's roster, currently in his ninth season with the organization. Having been with the Rockies since his MLB debut in 2017, he was present for the team's consecutive postseason appearances in '17 and '18. He has also been present for the following seven seasons of mediocre sub-.500 baseball, and it would appear the losses are taking a toll on him.

For reference, the Rockies' 6–31 record equates to a winning percentage of .162. Only one team in MLB history has had a worse winning percentage through a full season: the 1899 Cleveland Spiders who finished the year 20–134. If Colorado can't turn things around quickly, they could find themselves approaching those historic lows come season's end.

Afghanistan in must-win territory, Sri Lanka look to avoid big defeat

Big pictureThe headline is that Afghanistan absolutely to win in order to make the Super Four, or else Bangladesh get in ahead of them. Sri Lanka merely have to avoid being handed an all-time thrashing. If Sri Lanka bat first and make 150, for example, Afghanistan would have to chase that target down in 11.4 overs in order to knock Sri Lanka out and have Bangladesh accompany them to the Super Four. If Afghanistan bat first and make 150, Sri Lanka would have to score 84 or fewer for Bangladesh to qualify.Essentially, Afghanistan need to win. Bangladesh would ideally like Sri Lanka to win. This is what cricket is like midway through the third decade of the 21st century. India and Pakistan won’t shake hands after a match, but organisers insist on them playing each other at every major tournament nevertheless. This Asia Cup is structured to give them the best chance of having at least two meetings. Everyone else has little choice but to accept that competitive equilibrium must now be laid on the altar of capitalism.Sri Lanka, for the record, are very capable of collapsing. They almost lost against Hong Kong on Monday, their middle order entering a familiar nosedive following another Pathum Nissanka fifty. Afghanistan are also a team they have lost to three times in their eight T20I meetings. Both teams’ strengths over the last several years, however, have been their bowlers. Afghanistan have Rashid Khan, and Sri Lanka Wanindu Hasaranga – both excellent legspinners who add plenty with the bat. Worse than Aaronson: Farke must drop 4/10 Leeds dud who won 33% duels

Could Daniel Farke be the next Premier League manager in line to face the sack?

While Leeds United have picked up a promising three wins so far in the Premier League, fans of the Elland Road giants will also feel that there’s been a lot of other games this season where their side have been outplayed, with their 3-0 defeat at the hands of Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday falling into this category.

The Seagulls tallied up 14 shots on Lucas Perri’s goal compared to Leeds’ weak five on Bart Verbruggen’s largely untested net, as Fabian Hurzeler’s confident hosts never looked in danger of slipping up throughout their comfortable 90 minutes.

Farke will surely have to ring the changes for Leeds’ next Premier League clash away at Nottingham Forest to try and lift his side to bounce back, and to also save his skin, with Brenden Aaronson at risk of dropping out despite scoring a week prior.

Aaronson's poor performance vs Brighton

Aaronson wanted to kick on in the Whites’ first team picture away at the Amex, having been an exhilarating watch throughout Leeds’ 2-1 home win against West Ham United, with his bundled-in opener after three minutes nearly upstaged by an insane solo strike sailing in.

Yet, the Jekyll and Hyde American was way off it on the South Coast to add to Leeds fans’ frustrations surrounding his inconsistent performances.

Come the close of the match on Saturday, Aaronson failed to complete one single successful dribble from two attempts, failed to hit a single meaningful shot at the home side’s goal, and also only won a weak three duels from the ten he attempted.

It’s night and day from his high-octane showing against Nuno Espirito Santo’s men, where he was 100% successful with all his dribbles, on top of winning a hefty eight duels.

Patience must be extremely thin; therefore, when it comes to Farke choosing to pick Aaronson week in week out, knowing that an unbelievable display is often followed up by the number 11 putting in a disastrous no-show.

But, Aaronson is not the only underperformer in the German’s bad books.

Farke must drop 4/10 Leeds star

Brighton ran the Leeds defence ragged all afternoon long, as Jayden Bogle continually failed to lay a glove on the rampaging Diego Gomez, who would finish the one-sided match with two Premier League goals next to his name.

Joe Rodon also looked way below his usual standards, but the Welshman definitely has enough credit in his bank this season alone to demand he’s still in the first team frame, having popped up with two goals from the back.

On the contrary, his centre-back partner on the South Coast in Jaka Bijol, is yet to establish himself as a fan’s favourite, and he certainly won’t have endeared himself to the hardened West Yorkshire masses with his ropey showing against Hurzeler’s runaway hosts.

Indeed, away from spraying the ball about with some assurance, the brand-new Leeds’ number 15 struggled to contain the likes of Danny Welbeck throughout, leading to just one duel being won.

On top of that, Bijol would also fail to go in for a single tackle, leading Brighton to find it easy when carving open the away side’s frail defence at will.

Moreover, the former Udinese man very much lacked the pace and determination to track back when Yankuba Minteh and the aforementioned Gomez ran riot, with Pascal Struijk perhaps the better-suited centre-back option for this showdown.

Leeds fans had been crying out for their £15m summer recruit to start more games, but after his 4/10 afternoon against Brighton – which is the low score that was handed to him post-match by Leeds Live’s Isaac Johnson – he will surely be dropped back down to the bench, for the Dutchman to return to the XI.

Farke will pray that the changes that are made spur his team on to a rare away win against Nottingham Forest next, with a loss at the City Ground only pulling Leeds even closer to the relegation zone.

Man Utd have struck gold on talent who "has the same raw chaos as Rooney"

Manchester United have been known over recent years to invest heavily in youngsters who can make an immediate and long-term impact at Old Trafford.

Part of their £800m spending spree in the last four years has seen numerous big-money talents arrive at the club – with Leny Yoro making the move to join the Red Devils last summer.

Despite being just 18, the hierarchy forked out a reported £52m for the teenager’s signature, even fending off competition from Real Madrid for his services.

He’s since become a key component of Ruben Amorim’s first-team squad, already racking up 42 appearances in the last 12 months or so since his big-money transfer.

However, whilst he still has bags of time to reach world-class status, the Frenchman would do very well to hit the heights of one player during his own stint at the Theatre of Dreams.

Man Utd’s best ever young first-team addition

Back in the summer of 2004, eyebrows were raised across England after United paid a staggering £27m for the signature of teenage sensation Wayne Rooney from Everton.

Such a fee was a mammoth investment for an 18-year-old, but over two decades on, it’s clear the transfer is one of the Red Devils’ best in their 146-year history.

He would spend 13 successful years as a star player at Old Trafford, winning countless individual awards along with team success under the guidance of Sir Alex Ferguson.

The now 40-year-old won England’s Player of the Year award on five separate occasions, even winning the PFA Player of the Year award back in 2009/10 after scoring 34 times in all competitions.

Under the management of Sir Alex, he won five Premier League titles and a Champions League – subsequently making himself one of the most decorated English players of all time.

Individually, he was just as impressive, scoring 253 times for the Red Devils, a tally that ranks him top of the club’s all-time goalscorer charts – sitting ahead of Sir Bobby Charlton.

His talents were also there for all to see at international level, scoring 53 times, a record that saw him top the list for the Three Lions until Harry Kane came along.

Alongside his tangible contributions, Rooney made a name for himself as a warrior on the pitch, with one current player currently possessing a very similar playstyle.

The United player who is becoming the new Rooney

After scoring just 44 times across the 2024/25 campaign, Amorim made it abundantly clear to the United hierarchy that he wanted reinforcements within the final third.

Bryan Mbeumo was just one of the signings made during the off-season, arriving in a staggering £71m transfer from fellow top-flight outfit Brentford.

The Cameroonian international has already made a stellar start to life in Manchester, scoring five times and registering one assist in his first ten outings for the club.

His latest appearance against Brighton and Hove Albion was arguably his best to date, subsequently scoring twice and helping secure the manager’s third Premier League win in a row.

He was also joined at the Red Devils by Matheus Cunha, with the Brazilian also costing a pretty penny at £62.5m including add-ons from Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The Brazilian international has occupied the number ten role with Mbeumo at Old Trafford and has undoubtedly played a key role in the recent revival under Amorim.

Unlike the Cameroonian, he’s had to wait to make the desired impact, only registering his first goal for the Red Devils in this weekend’s convincing win over Brighton.

However, he’s still received key praise from former first-team member Patrice Evra, who claimed Cunha “has the same raw chaos as Rooney” – certainly high praise indeed.

His underlying stats at Old Trafford showcase the reasoning behind Evra’s comments, with the Brazilian currently creating 1.2 chances per 90 in the Premier League.

Other figures, such as 1.6 shots on target per 90 and 1.9 dribbles per 90, showcase his ability within the final third, which has already seen the forward become a fan-favourite.

However, his chaos without the ball is reflected in his tally of 0.7 ball regains per 90 in the final third – a tally which ranks him in the top 25% of all attackers in the division.

It’s certainly early days in his career at Old Trafford, but the signs are all positive for Cunha to become an influential figure in any success endured in the years ahead.

Should he continue on his current path, there’s no reason why he can’t have a similar impact to Rooney during his own period at the Theatre of Dreams.

Moyes can revive Barry & Beto by relocating Everton's "creator of chaos"

Everton have made a noticeable step forward in the early stages of the 2025/26 season.

Under David Moyes, the team has shown more cohesion, tempo, and tactical clarity than in recent campaigns.

They currently sit eighth in the Premier League with three wins and eleven points, having also picked up victories against Wolves and Brighton, while suffering narrow defeats to Leeds and Liverpool.

The improvement is clear, yet one area that remains a concern is Everton’s attacking output.

Despite the team showing better structure, their forwards have struggled to consistently convert opportunities into goals.

Moyes’ side has been effective in linking midfield to attack, but the finishing touch has often been missing.

This leaves room for a player capable of creating, unlocking defences, and elevating teammates to make a difference in front of goal.

The spotlight has primarily fallen on Thierno Barry and Beto, Everton’s two principal options at the No. 9 position.

Both have their strengths, but neither has yet stamped themselves as the first-choice striker capable of leading the line consistently.

That is where one of Everton’s best players comes into the conversation, ahead of Saturday’s meeting with Manchester City.

Beto and Barry's continued struggles at Everton

Barry, the French U21 international, arrived at Everton in the summer for £27.6m from Villarreal, bringing a profile similar to that of Dušan Vlahović or Ollie Watkins, as noted by FBref.

At 6ft 5in, he possesses a commanding aerial presence, winning nearly two-thirds of the duels contested in the penalty area last season and ranking in the 87th percentile for aerials won (3.84 per 90).

Barry is also adept at carrying the ball forward and stretching defensive lines, ranking in the 74th percentile for progressive carries (1.70 per 90) and the 62nd percentile for successful take-ons (0.77 per 90).

Despite these promising metrics, Barry has yet to make a significant impact in the Premier League.

Against Crystal Palace, for instance, he played 19 touches, completing only four of eight passes, registering no shots, and losing possession ten times, as per Sofascore.

While Moyes has cautioned that Barry needs time to adapt to the rigours of the Premier League, the sense remains that Everton require more immediate returns from their striking options.

Beto, meanwhile, is alternating with Barry in the forward role, showing glimpses of promise but failing to assert himself as the consistent focal point of attack.

Everton’s system demands a striker who can both finish and facilitate; however, both Barry and Beto have, at times, been inconsistent in contributing the decisive final action.

The rotation between them means neither has yet fully settled, and the team’s attacking rhythm has suffered as a result.

This scenario highlights the need for a complementary presence in midfield or wide areas, someone capable of linking play and providing the incisive passes that could allow Barry or Beto to flourish.

How Moyes can get Beto & Barry firing

Illiman Ndiaye, the 25-year-old French midfielder signed from Marseille, has the potential to be that catalyst.

His skill set is ideally suited to Everton’s current configuration: he can operate from the right wing or as a No. 10, carrying the ball, creating overloads, and providing decisive passes into the penalty area.

Ndiaye has already shown glimpses of his technical ability, composure under pressure, and intelligent movement.

He excels in transitioning defence to attack and ranks highly in progressive carries, progressive passes, and successful take-ons per 90 minutes.

His ability to break lines, maintain possession under pressure, and combine effectively with creative teammates could provide the service both Barry and Beto have been missing.

Described by Ben Mattinson as a “creator of chaos,” One of Ndiaye’s defining qualities is versatility.

Moyes has recently deployed him on the right flank, where he can drift inside to create space for overlapping full-backs, although he should be shifted into the No. 10 role, orchestrating attacks behind whichever striker starts.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Putting greater onus on his talents in a central role is crucial, particularly with Jack Grealish unavailable for Everton’s upcoming trip to the Etihad.

In his absence, Ndiaye can offer the creative spark necessary to maintain attacking fluidity, with the likes of Dwight McNeil or Tyler Dibling able to vie for Grealish’s vacant berth down the left.

Beyond statistics, Ndiaye brings energy and tactical intelligence, allowing Everton to press effectively and recover possession quickly, maintaining the high-intensity style Moyes demands.

His combination of technical ability and physical dynamism ensures that he can influence games even when the forwards are struggling for confidence.

For Moyes, integrating Ndiaye successfully could address Everton’s ongoing attacking inconsistencies.

If the Frenchman can link up effectively with Barry or Beto, it could unlock the finishing threat that has so far been sporadic.

Ndiaye’s ability to combine creativity, energy, and positional intelligence may prove the difference in converting strong performances into consistent wins.

Newcastle make fresh approach in race to sign "excellent" England int'l

With their sights set on the January transfer window, Newcastle United have reportedly already made an early approach about signing a 2026 target for Eddie Howe.

Newcastle's January transfer targets

Even though the summer transfer window just slammed shut, rumours are already beginning to arrive regarding potential 2026 deals. That should come as no surprise for Newcastle fans, however.

The Magpies endured a tumultuous summer before eventually welcoming the strikers that they so desperately needed, but were forced to take their focus away from other areas. Now, with Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa at the club, PIF have the chance to address the other concerns that Howe may have about his squad.

Newcastle begin their Champions League campaign with the tough test of meeting Barcelona at St. James’ Park.

ByAngus Sinclair Sep 18, 2025

One of those could come in central midfield. As strong as Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton are together, there may be some concerns about the drop-off in quality when any of those three are missing. And whilst Jacob Ramsey’s arrival may help in that regard, those at St James’ Park are still eyeing improvements.

According to recent reports, Newcastle have set their sights on signing Kobbie Mainoo if the chance arrives in January. The Manchester United midfielder was denied the chance to leave Old Trafford on loan in the summer and was told by Ruben Amorim to fight for his place. Just how long he puts up with doing that is the question that Newcastle and others will have when the winter window arrives.

In a World Cup year, players who find themselves on the fringes of their current sides will be ones to watch. It’s not just Mainoo who’s struggling with that problem. Alongside him, Newcastle are also reportedly eyeing another England international.

Newcastle make approach to sign Gallagher

According to The Boot Room, Newcastle have made an approach to sign Conor Gallagher from Atletico Madrid in January. The Magpies have reportedly made contact asking to be kept informed about the England midfielder, who is growing frustrated by his bit-part role at the Spanish club.

If Atletico Madrid make the former Chelsea man available, then the likes of Manchester United, Newcastle and Crystal Palace are all reportedly ready to race towards his signature. Given that he just started against Liverpool in the Champions League, however, it seems as though Diego Simeone is still keen to find a place for Gallagher in his side.

A player who needs no introduction to English football, the 25-year-old once found himself at the centre of Gareth Southgate’s praise. The former England boss was pleased with how he worked his way back into the Three Lions’ set-up in a similar way to how he could now do so under Thomas Tuchel.

With Newcastle setting their sights on his arrival and the World Cup approaching, there’s no doubt that Gallagher is already one to watch for the January transfer window.

Sophia Dunkley, Alice Capsey set up Surrey thrashing of Durham

Surrey chalked up their first ever Metro Bank Cup win in emphatic style, beating Durham by 104 runs at Beckenham. The home side posted a daunting 348 for 6 off their 50 overs, in an innings dominated by a third-wicket stand of 155 between Sophia Dunkley, who hit 92, and Alice Capsey, who made 79.With the ball, Ryana MacDonald-Gay did the initial damage with 3 for 38, before Bryony Smith, Dani Gregory and Kalea Moore all claimed two wickets each. Leah Dobson showed some resistance with 53, in a stand of 93 with Katherine Fraser, who made 43, but when they were out in quick succession the required rate was over 11 and beyond the reach of the Durham tail. They were all out for 244 in 45.1 overs.Surrey won the toss and chose to bat at a ground unrecognisable from the polar wasteland it resembled a week ago. Beckenham was drenched in sunshine throughout and England head coach Charlotte Edwards watched from a deck chair in the shade of a lime tree, opposite the pavilion.Danni Wyatt-Hodge set the tone by launching Fraser back over her head for six, but she fell for 34, caught by Dobson off Phoebe Turner at deep extra. Dobson then caught Smith, who’d made 36 before she miscued a sweep off Katie Levick.Capsey reached 50 with a single off Mady Villiers and Dunkley did likewise when she drove Abi Glen for one, but Sophie Turner finally broke the partnership when Capsey skied her to Suzie Bates at deep mid-off and Dunkley perished when she holed out to Phoebe Turner and was caught by Dobson.Alice Monaghan then went for 32, caught by Phoebe Turner at short fine leg trying to ramp Glen. Paige Scholfield was dropped on 4 and made a quickfire 21 from seven before she was stumped by Bess Heath off Bates, leaving Alice Davidson-Richards on 40 not out from 23 and Kira Chathli unbeaten on 5, after a botched run-out attempt off the final ball.Durham’s openers put on 28 for the first wicket before MacDonald-Gay took two wickets in two balls. Emma Marlow was plum lbw for 9 and Hollie Armitage was bowled middle-stump for a golden duck, leaving Villiers to steer the hat-trick ball through gully for a single.MacDonald-Gay took her third wicket when Bates tried to hook her and was caught behind for 28. Smith then had Heath lbw for 15 and Villiers caught by Scholfield for 25 before Moore bowled Phoebe Turner for five to reduce Durham to 99 for six.Dobson and Fraser kept things interesting for a while but when the former was bowled by Moore the required rate was into double figures.Dani Gregory had Fraser caught on the cow corner boundary by Scholfield and she got her second wicket with a leg-side delivery when Sophie Turner was caught behind for 5. Although Glen boosted the net run rate with 37 off 37 balls, the rout was sealed when she cut Monaghan straight to MacDonald-Gay at backward point.

Arteta can get Gyokeres firing at Arsenal by unleashing an "immense talent"

Arsenal’s summer transfer window underlined their ambition to finally turn promise into silverware.

After finishing second last season, ten points behind Liverpool, and reaching the Champions League semi-finals, Mikel Arteta moved aggressively in the market.

Arsenal manager MikelArtetacelebrates after Bukayo Saka scores their second goal

Martin Zubimendi, Noni Madueke, Cristhian Mosquera, Christian Nørgaard, Kepa Arrizabalaga and Piero Hincapié all arrived.

However, the two headline signings were Viktor Gyökeres from Sporting Lisbon and Eberechi Eze from Crystal Palace.

Although Arsenal’s early results have shown promise, several issues still need to be addressed.

They opened with a 1-0 win at Old Trafford and followed it with a 5-0 demolition of Leeds at the Emirates.

But a trip to Anfield exposed their old frustrations, as they failed to test Liverpool and slipped to a 1-0 defeat courtesy of a wondrous Dominic Szoboszlai free-kick. Gyokeres, meanwhile, was far from his best…

Gyökeres and the Anfield Test

Gyökeres was signed for £63.5m with the expectation that he could be the missing piece in Arsenal’s title chase.

The 27-year-old had left Sporting Lisbon with a scarcely believable record of 97 goals and 28 assists in 102 appearances.

According to FBref, he combines the raw power of a traditional striker with modern mobility, ranking in the 94th percentile for goals per 90 minutes (0.85) and the 97th percentile for progressive passes received (8.50 per 90).

In other words, he not only scores frequently but consistently finds space behind the defensive line. His home debut hinted at that pedigree.

Two goals against Leeds made for a dream Emirates introduction.

Yet the Anfield clash told a very different story. Arsenal mustered just a single shot on target across 90 minutes, and Gyökeres looked isolated throughout.

He finished the game with no shots attempted, just one dribble, and only two key passes created for teammates. Of his seven attempted passes, just five found their mark (71%), and he lost possession six times.

In duels, he fared little better: winning three of five on the ground but none of his three aerial battles.

Those numbers didn’t reflect a lack of effort; they reflected a lack of supply.

Gyökeres is built to attack space and thrive off quick service, but when that supply line is starved, he drifts out of games.

At Anfield, he was forced to drop deep in search of the ball, which blunted his penalty-box threat and left Arsenal short of a central presence when they did occasionally progress up the pitch.

For a striker capable of bullying defences and finishing ruthlessly, the lesson was clear: he cannot do it alone.

He needs a consistent creative partner feeding him opportunities.

Eberechi Eze is the key to unlocking Gyokeres

That’s where Eze comes in.

Signed for £60m, the England international returned to the club that once released him as a teenager.

Introduced from the bench at Anfield on the 70th minute, he offered a glimpse of why Martin Keown once called him an “immense talent.”

His ability to glide into half-spaces, receive under pressure and commit defenders suggested a player tailor-made to unlock Gyökeres.

The data paints the same picture.

At Crystal Palace last season, Eze ranked in the 84th percentile for assists per 90 (0.30) and the 83rd percentile for shot-creating actions per 90 (4.64), underlining his consistent creative output, as per FBref.

He also sat in the 75th percentile for key passes (1.97 per 90) and the 73rd percentile for crosses (4.09 per 90).

Few midfielders in the league combined end product with such variety in chance creation.

Just as importantly, Eze has proven he can thrive alongside a physically imposing striker.

At Palace, his link-up play with Jean-Philippe Mateta became a central weapon.

Eze would drift between the lines, drag markers out of position, and release angled passes into Mateta’s runs.

Gyökeres, with his superior movement and finishing, is a natural upgrade on that template.

The parallels are striking: a technician who thrives on the half-turn paired with a hulking centre-forward built to punish defences.

At Anfield, Arsenal’s failure to connect midfield and attack highlighted the need for exactly that kind of partnership.

As Eze becomes an established member of the side, Gyökeres’ movement into channels and across the penalty area can finally be rewarded.

Gyökeres has already shown he can bully defenders and stretch backlines, while Eze has proven he can unlock tightly set defences with vision and flair.

Together, they can transform Arsenal’s sterile possession into penetrative football.

Arsenal brewing the homegrown Eze who's the "biggest talent in England"

The sensational talent will become a superstar for Mikel Arteta and Arsenal.
