Glasgow Rangers: Fans rage at Mike Mulraney’s elevation to temporary Scottish FA president

Glasgow Rangers have not had the best of relationships with those in positions of power in Scottish football in recent weeks and months.

Ever since the season was suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic, there has been chaos in Scottish football, and the ‘Gers have often been the ones leading the charge against the authorities.

Firstly, they accused the SPFL of corruption following their handling of the league resolution proposal, and they even pushed for an independent investigation into the governing body with the aid of a 200-page dossier as proof of their claims. The investigation was eventually quashed but, to some extent, the damage had already been done.

The latest news from the SFA has not gone down too well, either. They have announced that, due to health issues, their president Rod Petrie has stepped down temporarily, and that vice-president Mike Mulraney will take his place.

These ‘Gers supporters are far from happy with this news – they believe that Mulraney is anti-Rangers. They have taken to Twitter to share their thoughts and you can see some of the best comments from the social media platform below:

Newcastle United: Magpies urged to sign Nabil Bentaleb permanently from Schalke

Newcastle United have reportedly been urged to sign Nabil Bentaleb on a permanent deal from German club Schalke 04 after only initially having him on loan for the 2019/20 season.

According to Bild (via NUFC 360), the Bundesliga outfit are hoping that the Magpies will opt to buy the former Tottenham Hotspur man on a permanent basis for €10m, which is the equivalent of around £9.1m.

Schalke would apparently like to use the potential transfer fee that they receive for Bentaleb to improve their own squad for the upcoming summer transfer window.

However, the Gelsenkirchen-based are nervous to discover what the plans are for the 25-year old at St. James’ Park, as there has not yet been any contact between the two clubs to discuss a possible move, and Steve Bruce has admitted that deals such as this one for loan players will not be sorted out quickly.

Newcastle may be looking to potentially push the asking price down if they are to negotiate a permanent transfer for Bentaleb in the summer.

Indeed, the Algerian international could be a decent buy based off of his stats so far in the 2019/20 Premier League season compared with some of the other central midfield players currently with the Magpies.

Bentaleb has averaged more interceptions per game than Isaac Hayden, Jonjo Shelvey and Sean Longstaff, and also boasts the highest passing accuracy out of all of them, as per Whoscored.

Whether Newcastle decide to sign him on a permanent deal is another question, but it could well be a good move based on some of Bentaleb’s statistics compared to the other midfielders at the club as well as a potentially lowered asking fee.

Athletic journalist explains why Mourinho isn’t sure about Max Aarons

Tottenham could really do with bolstering their backline this summer.

The London club conceded eight more goals than they did in 2018/19 this season, and with Jan Vertonghen leaving the club and Kieran Trippier yet to be adequately replaced, they need some reinforcements.

Fortunately, it seems as though the club recognise this problem, being linked to numerous defenders such as Kim Min-Jae, Malang Sarr and Max Aarons.

All three young defenders are on Tottenham’s radar, but it has now been revealed that Jose Mourinho isn’t sure about signing Aarons.

What’s been said then?

The Athletic’s Jack Pitt-Brooke wrote a piece talking about some sensible transfers Spurs could make this summer, and inevitably, he got on to talking about Aarons.

“Max Aarons of relegated Norwich City would be one option after an impressive season despite his club’s struggles, although Mourinho is understood to have reservations about Aarons’ size,” he wrote.

Dinosaur Mourinho

Mourinho is often jeered at for being a relic of the past as modern football has evolved around his heavily defensive style that doesn’t seem to be as effective as it once was, and this is a prime example of that.

Aarons is a defender being coveted by some of the biggest clubs in the world such as Bayern Munich, but the Spurs manager isn’t convinced because he’s a bit too small for his liking.

The ironic thing is that Aarons is 5 ft 10, which is actually quite big for a full-back, and having smaller defenders hasn’t stopped the former Chelsea manager from being successful in the past.

Ashley Cole was one of his mainstay full-backs at Stamford Bridge and he’s an inch smaller than Aarons, while The Portuguese manager was key in bringing Marcelo through at Real Madrid and he only stands at 5 ft 9.

Spurs would be foolish to let something as trivial as size put them off signing the £30m-rated Norwich star.

Everton: Fan laud Abdoulaye Doucoure as he rejects Fulham and Wolves

Lots of Everton fans have been lauding Abdoulaye Doucoure as Telefoot Chaine (via The Toffee Blues) have reported that the Watford ace has rejected offers from the Merseyside club’s fellow Premier League rivals in Wolverhampton Wanderers and Fulham as well as German team Hertha Berlin.

As per the outlet, Doucoure would like to sign for the Toffees and work with Carlo Ancelotti in the new 2020/21 season.

Indeed, the central midfield player is a man that the Blues have reportedly been targeting throughout the summer transfer window, and it looks as if he will sign if EFC can match the asking price of the Hornets.

Comparing the stats of the 27-year old to Fabian Delph, Tom Davies and Andre Gomes in the Premier League in the 2019/20 season, Doucoure averaged the most tackles, shots and key passes per game, according to Whoscored.

The Frenchman would arguably be an upgrade on the current midfield options at Goodison Park, and so it is perhaps not a surprise that these supporters lauded the news on Twitter, with one fan even branding Doucoure as ‘excellent’:

Coventry: Mark Robins’ side to land significant windfall if £30m valued striker moves

Former Coventry City striker Callum Wilson could leave Bournemouth this summer and that would see the Sky Blues receive a 10% sell-on figure.

With the Cherries suffering relegation to the Championship from the Premier League last season, a summer sale is expected to to develop at the Vitality stadium.

Wilson, who scored eight goals in 35 Premier League games last term, is said to be one of the players who could be sold to hand the club some much needed transfer funds this summer.

Joining Bournemouth in 2014, the England international formerly played for Coventry, starting his career with the Sky Blues.

Valued at £18m by website Transfermarkt, the 28-year-old has been told that he will not be allowed to leave the former Premier League club for less than £30m.

That news will delight Coventry having installed a sell-on clause on Wilson’s deal to Bournemouth of 10%, meaning they could recoup a sum of £3m if the striker moves on for said asking price.

Coventry LIVE claim that West Ham United and Everton are among the front runners to potentially make a summer move.

Great news for Coventry who would be able to utilise that potential amount on either a new signing or player wages.

Mark Robins has been excellent this summer in terms of bringing in some new faces and Wilson’s potential summer move could see him add to those.

Everton must reignite interest in one-time Marco Silva target Wilfried Zaha

Everton could be about to reignite their interest in a player that Marco Silva wanted to sign last summer if emerging reports are to be believed…

What’s the word?

According to Peter Harding, Crystal Palace winger Wilfried Zaha is said to be keen on becoming part of Carlo Ancelotti’s squad this window, although it remains to be seen if the Italian will come forward with a bid.

Earlier this summer, Eagles boss Roy Hodgson revealed that the 27-year-old would like to move on from Selhurst Park – a year after a move to the Toffees fell through, and the Daily Mail credit them with interest once again.

He could be available at a cut-price of just £30m this time around.

And it appears as if the veteran manager is preparing for life without his star man as Sky Sports claim the south Londoners are eyeing a move for Sassuolo winger Jeremie Boga.

An instant upgrade?

If all of the above turns out to be true, then Ancelotti should absolutely go back in for Zaha before the transfer window shuts next month.

Now that he’s bolstered the engine room with a trio of exciting additions, it’s time to improve the creativity and impetus out wide – and the Ivorian fits the bill immensely.

Everton’s wingers drastically underperformed last season. Theo Walcott, Bernard and £34m summer signing Alex Iwobi combined for just six goals, which is less than half of top-scoring duo Richarlison and Dominic Calvert-Lewin who both hit 13 for the season.

Zaha contributed directly to seven goals and averaged a whopping 4.3 dribbles (third-best in the PL) and 1.6 shots per game, via WhoScored.

As Hodgson has said in the past, the 27-year-old is a “game-changer” whom they “depend on,” so he could certainly become the next part of the Italian’s revolution at Goodison Park.

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino was once interested in the winger and is thought to have believed that he could be “the next Ronaldo,” according to chairman Steve Parish.

The “unbelievable” Eagles sensation would surely be a welcome addition in Merseyside and for just £30m – compared to last year’s £80m – it would be quite the steal.

Manchester United: Fans react as Red Devils step up hunt for a new defender

It was not the start to the 2020/21 season that Manchester United wanted as they lost 3-1 to Roy Hodgson’s Crystal Palace at Old Trafford in their first fixture.

This has seen the club receive a lot of criticism, including some from former United player Patrice Evra, who ranted passionately about chief transfer negotiator Matt Judge on Instagram.

It seems like the loss and such criticism has prompted Judge to act, as he has reportedly been in contact with intermediaries after Saturday’s defeat and the Red Devils are now stepping up plans to strengthen the defence. This news, as tweeted by @utdreport, has sparked plenty of reaction from the club’s fan base, with some believing it is too little too late and that Judge needs to be sacked due to the lack of activity in the window before the season started as they have only signed one player.

Meanwhile, some are refusing to get excited until seeing proof of fresh signings, which is understandable as there was heavy speculation around players like Jadon Sancho and Sergio Reguilon joining, but the latter moved to Tottenham Hotspur and a Sancho deal is looking very unlikely.

This highlights that Judge has a lot to do to get back on the good side of many supporters and getting a new defender as soon as possible would be a good start.

Newcastle United: Magpies could revive interest in Michael Cuisance after Leeds transfer collapse

Newcastle United could make a late move to bring Bayern Munich midfielder Michael Cuisance to St James’ Park before the transfer deadline after the 21-year-old’s move to Leeds United fell through.

Cuisance had looked like he was on his way to the Premier League to join newly-promoted Leeds after they had agreed a deal with Bayern Munich for the midfielder. However, the Frenchman failed a medical on Thursday due to a problem with his leg and the Whites did not want to risk signing him, according to Bild via Get German Football News.

The midfielder has been informed by Bayern Munich that he is free to leave the club before the transfer window closes, having fallen down the pecking order with the German champions, as per Sky Germany.

The Magpies had been reportedly interested in making a move for Cuisance, and Newcastle – along with Ligue 1 sides Nice and Marseille – could make a late move to sign the midfielder from the Champions League holders, according to Get French Football News, via Get German Football News.

Leeds had been prepared to pay £18m for Cuisance, with the 21-year-old having shown his potential to develop into an excellent midfield player during his time at Borussia Mönchengladbach, where he made 11 appearances in the 2018/19 campaign and 24 the previous season, as per Sofascore.

It would be a surprise to see Newcastle revive their interest in Cuisance and sign the midfielder before the deadline, but if they did it would represent another quality addition for the Magpies. The midfielder failed a medical with Leeds and there could be a risk in bringing him in to St James’ Park, but Steve Bruce might want to put his faith in the 21-year-old making a swift recovery from his current injury.

Cuisance is a player who should only get better over the next few years and bringing him to Tyneside would be a smart move if they can negotiate a cheaper deal with Bayern Munich due to the midfielder’s injury troubles. Newcastle could well make Leeds regret not taking a gamble on the Frenchman.

Glasgow Rangers suffer another injury blow as Allan McGregor is a doubt for the Old Firm derby

Glasgow Rangers have suffered another injury blow ahead of the Old Firm derby at Celtic Park. The Daily Record has revealed that Gers goalkeeper Allan McGregor is a doubt for this weekend’s top-of-the-table clash.

It’s also claimed that Steven Gerrard could be without four other players for Saturday’s lunchtime kick-off between Rangers and Celtic, as he’s already got doubts over Joe Aribo, Filip Helander and Kemar Roofe, whilst Alfredo Morelos isn’t expected to be back at Ibrox until later this week after featuring for Colombia.

The Gers sit top of the Scottish Premiership table, a point ahead of Neil Lennon’s side, with so much at stake heading into the first Old Firm clash of the season. Nikola Katic will not feature as he battles back from a long-term injury problem.

But it is McGregor whose absence will be most keenly felt if he is indeed forced to miss the game against Celtic. Gerrard’s side have the chance to go four points clear of Celtic if the result goes their way at Parkhead. Although they may have to do so without the former 42-cap Scotland international, which will be no easy task.

It’s safe to say that losing his first-choice keeper would be a big blow for Gerrard as Jon McLaughlin would have to take his place between the sticks. Whilst McLaughlin is no doubt a fine understudy, he does not have anywhere near the same level of experience as McGregor, who has been named in the Europa League squad this season, despite his advancing years.

Gerrard could be forced to start McLaughlin, which may be a gamble seeing as he has conceded six goals in three games against Celtic so far from his time with Hearts, via Transfermarkt.

Whilst the Rangers boss does have the luxury of other options, he would obviously rather start McGregor, who has made 30 appearances against their arch-rivals, keeping nine clean sheets so far, via Transfermarkt.

By comparison, McLaughlin has never actually appeared in the Old Firm derby before, which is far from ideal. To make matters worse, the 33-year-old hasn’t kept a single clean sheet against Celtic in his entire career either.

Gerrard will face an anxious wait before kick-off, that’s for sure.

Everton dodged a bullet in River Plate’s Santiago Sosa

Everton appear to have dodged a bullet by failing to get a deal for Santiago Sosa across the line in 2019, given the defensive midfielder’s form with current side River Plate.

What’s the word?

According to Ole via Sport Witness, Everton had reached an agreement with River Plate to sign Sosa in the summer of 2019 during Marco Silva’s final market at the helm, but failed to see the deal rubber-stamped by the Premier League.

It’s claimed that league officials blocked the €15million (£13.5m) move, likely through issues relating to his need for a work permit, which would not have surfaced just days later when the 21-year-old secured a European passport.

The passport arrived just too late for Sosa to be registered for Everton and the deal never saw the light of day again, much to River Plate’s benefit as the Argentina U20 international is now being lauded by Ole for his form in South America.

However, when assessed on paper, Everton appear to have dodged a bullet thanks to the Premier League’s decision as Sosa is far from showing himself to be the defensive midfield enforcer Silva required at the time.

Why was Sosa not the answer?

During murmurs that Sosa could struggle obtaining a work permit in order to sign for Everton, the Liverpool Echo suggested he was a “tenacious and aggressive” player when out of possession while boasting the skillset of “a hybrid between a number six and a number eight”.

Information remains thin for the 5 ft 10 River Plate product, but Transfermarkt data shows he has seen a marginal decrease in his market value since the Toffees’ interest while rarely entering the first-team squad in their 2019/20 Superliga efforts.

All in, Sosa made only two noted appearances last season, while playing just 125 minutes in the group stages of the 2020 Copa Libertadores over three outings with one start.

His efforts in those Copa Libertadores fixtures would by no means suggest he would have made a successful adaption to the Premier League last year, as Sosa has averaged just 0.3 tackles, 0.3 interceptions, 1.0 key balls and 0.7 shots a game along with winning a mere 0.7 ground duels and 1.0 aerial duels, per SofaScore.

Had Everton spent €15m on Sosa and seen a similar output, questions would have been raised over Silva’s pursuit of a player the BBC’s South American football correspondent Tim Vickery described as an old-fashioned type.

“Sosa is a holding midfielder, better at picking a pass than the defensive side of his game,” Vickery told the All Football App. “He’s got a little bit of old-fashioned swagger. In the old days in Argentina, that No. 5 was the boss of the team, the man who played the vital first pass out of defence.

“But the thing with him is it’s so early. He’s only played a handful of games for River Plate, when they’ve fielded an under-strength side, so if Everton buy him now, to go straight into the first-team would be a massive step up.

“He’s one for the long-term and looks promising. He would worry me a little bit with his lack of pace for the defensive side of his duties, but he’s certainly an interesting player with the ball at his feet.”

AND in other news, Everton are yet to open talks with a key club figure who’s set to be out of contract next summer.
