Man City, Real Madrid and Europe's 20 most expensive squads of 2018

Clubs are spending huge amounts of money as they aim for success at home and on the continent – but which squads are the most expensive?

Some of the world's most costly squads have been assembled in Europe as clubs pursue silverware.

UEFA's annual Club Licensing Benchmarking Report has revealed that the top 20 most expensively assembled squads on the continent rose in value by 26 per cent at the end of the 2018 financial year when compared with 12 months previously.

Some of the confederation's biggest clubs are included in the list, while there are also some surprises.

Salisu, Semenyo and Owusu: Who could join Ghana for the first time in June?

GOAL looks at some players who could commence their international career with the Black Stars next month

After beating Nigeria to a World Cup ticket in March, Ghana are set to return to action for what will be two games in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers and two friendly matches.

First on the agenda will be matches against Madagascar and the Central African Republic in a bid to make next year's Afcon finals in Cote d'Ivoire.

A game against Japan in the 2022 Kirin Cup will follow, after which the Black Stars face either Chile or Japan based on the outcome of the first cup fixture.

GOAL highlights five players who could feature in the June international assignments ahead of an anticipated imminent official squad announcement.

  • Gettyimages

    Mohammed Salisu

The Southampton defender has turned down multiple Ghana invitations since 2019 but after holding recent meetings with new Black Stars boss Otto Addo and football association president Kurt Okraku, the 23-year-old is tipped to be called up for June's round of internationals.

    Antoine Semenyo

The Bristol City striker was expected to link up with Ghana for the first time for March's tie against Nigeria but was forced to miss the opportunity due to injury. He is expected to be named in Ghana's squad for the first time for the upcoming games.

  • Gettyimages

    Leeroy Owusu

The Willem II right-back reportedly missed the chance of a first Ghana call-up for the Nigeria duels due to a delay in the processing of his nationality documentation. It will not be surprising to see him in Ghana's squad in the next selection announcement.

According to reports, the Brighton and Hove Albion defender has sealed a switch from England to Ghana and should that be the case, he is likely to receive his first Black Stars call-up this month.

Break the bank for Bellingham! Which club needs to sign England's wonderkid the most?

The 19-year-old has already shone at the World Cup, with there set to be a huge bidding war this summer to lure him away from Borussia Dortmund

When England needed someone to break Iran’s stubborn resistance on Monday, it was Jude Bellingham who popped up with the crucial moment of magic.

That it was the 19-year-old who opened the floodgates in the 6-2 victory should not have come as a surprise to anyone, given the incredible heights he has already hit in his short career with Borussia Dortmund.

But the goal, along with his superb performance, was just another reminder of the incredible quality and potential that the former Birmingham City starlet possesses.

Bellingham will be out to replicate his heroics on Friday when England meet the United States in their second group-stage game, looking to make it two wins from two in Qatar.

Clubs from across Europe will once again have their focus aimed directly on the teenager as they prepare for what is expected to be a fierce transfer battle for the midfielder this summer.

And GOAL has taken a look at which clubs could be in the running for Bellingham at the end of the season, and where he could potentially make the biggest impact…

  • Getty Images

    Liverpool

It seems like Bellingham has been linked with a transfer to Liverpool ever since he first made his move to Dortmund from Birmingham.

The Reds are big admirers of the midfielder, and with both Jordan Henderson and Thiago Alcantara the wrong side of 30, there is a clear spot in the starting XI waiting for him at Anfield.

Jurgen Klopp rarely strays far from his tried and trusted 4-3-3 formation, and while there is a huge emphasis on physicality and tactical discipline, we've seen with Thiago (and to a lesser extent Harvey Elliott) a bit of a shift towards looking at a more technical, creative midfield.

So someone like Bellingham would be perfect in that regard as Klopp looks to reshape what is an ageing area of his team.

The big question mark over Bellingham and Liverpool is whether the Reds would have the financial ability to compete against other top clubs for the England star.

Would they potentially spend over £100 million on a single player at a time when owners FSG are exploring ways of selling the club? It just feels doubtful, especially if they fail to secure qualification to the Champions League next season.

It’s something you could never rule out, however, as the Reds have shown in the past they will spend big to sign a player they believe will really make a difference, with the capture of Virgil van Dijk a clear example of that.

    Manchester City

City certainly wouldn’t have any issue meeting Dortmund’s financial demands when it comes to Bellingham, and having signed Erling Haaland and Manuel Akanji from the Bundesliga outfit last summer, the two clubs have a decent relationship.

Pep Guardiola has not hidden his admiration for Bellingham in the past, having hailed him as the "whole package" earlier in the season after City met Dortmund in the Champions League.

And so the Premier League champions have to be considered one of the front runners when it comes to potentially signing the England star, especially when you look at their current midfield.

Bernardo Silva continues to be a star for City, but he has been open to joining Barcelona for the past couple of seasons. If the Catalan giants finally pay up this summer, then Bellingham would be the ideal replacement.

City will also have to start pondering the unthinkable soon and start looking for a long-term Kevin De Bruyne successor, who will be 32 by the start of next season.

So when you put all that together, Bellingham and City feels like a good fit.

  • Getty

    Manchester United

United are rebuilding and they certainly need a new poster boy after ditching Cristiano Ronaldo.

Whatever happens at Old Trafford and the potential sale of the club in the near future, you know United will be able to compete financially, such is their immense commercial firepower.

But whether Bellingham would want to move to a club that is just starting a rebuild is unclear.

This next move for the midfielder feels like a big one. He will have his pick of the top clubs in the world, so it feels unlikely he would opt for a team who might not be ready to compete for the biggest trophies.

But United can never be ruled out due to their vast resources, and for all the upheaval they have gone through in recent years, they are still a huge club that can sway a player’s thinking.

There is also an obvious opening for Bellingham in United’s midfield, which has been an area where improvements have been needed for some time now.

United are known admirers for Bellingham and it feels certain that they will be in the running for him if he does become available. It just feels, however, they will be behind some of their rivals in the race.

    Chelsea

There were question marks over whether Chelsea would be able to maintain their spending power following Todd Boehly’s American led takeover earlier in the year, but those were quickly put to bed when the Blues splashed out more than £270 million during a record-breaking summer transfer window.

They have shown, then, that they are still a force to be reckoned with in the market and they do hold an interest in Bellingham.

And with Jorginho and N’Golo Kante’s contracts due to expire at the end of the season and Denis Zakaria expected to return to Juventus following his loan spell at Stamford Bridge, midfield reinforcements will be needed.

Chelsea are at the start of another rebuild under Graham Potter and there is a clear need to freshen up an ageing squad with some top young talent, especially in the centre of the pitch.

So Bellingham would be perfect for them, and given the way the west London club operated in the summer market, you would expect they will push very hard to try and win the race for the England star.

Sign a midfielder, Jurgen! Liverpool winners, losers and ratings as Konate and Van Dijk take a battering at Brentford

Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk both endured nightmare outings in a 3-1 defeat in London but midfield remains the Reds' real weak spot…

Liverpool's frailties were laid bare once more as they ushered in the New Year with a risible 3-1 defeat at Brentford.

Jurgen Klopp's side could have moved fifth in the Premier League with a win, but they folded in West London, conceding twice in the first half and then again late on, as the Bees leapt to within two points of their vaunted opponents in the table.

Ibrahima Konate's own goal gave Thomas Frank's side a 20th-minute lead, and after Brentford had seen two goals chalked off for offside, Yoann Wissa doubled their advantage three minutes before half-time.

Klopp made three substitutions at half time, with Virgil van Dijk among those replaced, and Liverpool started the second period well, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain heading them back into the game five minutes after the restart.

But they were unable to build on that goal, and after Konate and Darwin Nunez had spurned chances, they were undone on the break late on, as Bryan Mbeumo got the better of Konate to fire home.

Liverpool could now find themselves seven points off the top four if Manchester United win on Tuesday, with the optimism of a four-game winning run completely dampened by another terrible away showing.

Here, GOAL runs through the winners and losers of a remarkable game…

  • Getty

    The Winners

    Brentford's home support:

The popular story may be about Liverpool's misery, but for every loser there is a winner, and in this instance there could be no argument. Brentford deserved their win, and their home fans deserved the chance to rub it in to their Red counterparts. "We're just too good for you," sang the Brentford fans in the closing stages as Liverpool, like Manchester United earlier in the season, left the Gtech Community Stadium with nothing. Jurgen Klopp's side had returned to Premier League action with a pair of scrappy wins over Aston Villa and Leicester, but they had no answer here to the Bees' robustness, energy and set-piece threat, especially in the first half. They rallied after the break – they had to – but Thomas Frank's side stood firm and took advantage of yet another defensive slip-up to seal the points. As Liverpool's players sloped off to the dressing room at the final whistle, Brentford's conducted a lap of honour, and why shouldn't they? 2021 was glorious, 2022 successful, and 2023 has started in fine fashion for the men from West London.

    Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain:

It feels a little bold to single out any Liverpool player as a 'winner' from this contest, but Oxlade-Chamberlain at least marked a landmark game with a goal, and a well-taken one at that. It says everything about his injury struggles at Anfield that this was his 100th Premier League appearance for the Reds. He has, after all, been with the club for five-and-a-half years. And some would say his presence in the starting XI for a third successive game hints at the squad issues facing the Reds currently. But there he was, setting up a chance for Kostas Tsimikas in the first half with a lovely flick and then timing his arrival into the penalty area perfectly to glance Trent Alexander-Arnold's cross home. It looked then like Liverpool may be set for a rousing fightback, but it wasn't to be. Oxlade-Chamberlain made way for Curtis Jones late on, continuing a remarkable record; he hasn't completed 90 minutes in the Premier League since April 2018. At least he was on the scoresheet here, not that it will provide him or his team-mates with much consolation.

    Manchester United:

Tottenham are faltering, Chelsea are struggling and Liverpool remain nothing if not inconsistent. And with all that, Manchester United find themselves in the box seat to secure a top-four finish, and with it a return to the Champions League. Erik ten Hag's men can move seven clear of Liverpool by beating Bournemouth at Old Trafford on Tuesday. Given the way Klopp's side are playing, that would be a significant deficit.

  • Getty

    The Losers

    Liverpool's midfield:

Jurgen Klopp says Liverpool can't 'play Monopoly' in January, but they certainly can't afford to ignore the midfield issues which are undermining their bid for Champions League qualification. Set-pieces and crosses may have been their undoing in the first half here, but their problems stemmed from the middle of the field, their inability to cover spaces and control games as a result. Jordan Henderson had struggled badly against Leicester on Friday, but he could not be blamed here. Instead, it was Harvey Elliott toiling on the right of the midfield three, the youngster overrun and unable to offer enough with the ball to compensate for his passiveness without it. Klopp has sought to reinvent the 19-year-old as a midfielder, but the experiment is yet to bear fruit. Liverpool need established talent in there, and they need it fast. Whether that's Matheus Nunes, the latest player linked with a move to Anfield, or someone else, something needs to happen in January. If it doesn't, the Reds can kiss goodbye to the top four.

    Kostas Tsimikas:

There was nothing surprising about Brentford's approach here. From the kick-off, they sent the ball backwards and then launched it upfield, looking to put Liverpool's defenders under pressure and seize upon any second balls dropping in the final third. Initially, they started by testing out Konate and Virgil van Dijk, but it wasn't long before the hosts began to train their sights on Liverpool's left-back, and Tsimikas had no answer to the bombardment which came his way. All the chaos came down the Greek's flank, with Oxlade-Chamberlain and Thiago Alcantara offering insufficient protection. Tsimikas missed a good chance to level the game at 1-1, denied by David Raya, and he could not get close to Mathias Jensen before the Brentford skipper crossed for Wissa to make it 2-0. It was no surprise when he was replaced by Andy Robertson at half-time.

    Ibrahima Konate:

It's not been the best couple of weeks for Liverpool's No.5. Having suffered the heartache of defeat in the World Cup final with France, Konate endured a miserable return to club action here, scoring an unfortunate own goal to give Brentford the lead, and then ending up flat on his face as Bryan Mbeumo secured the points for the home side late on. Konate wanted a free-kick for a push, but referee Stuart Attwell was having none of it and his VAR, Darren England, agreed. It was timid defending from a player whose physicality and power is usually an asset. With Van Dijk taken off at half time, Liverpool's starting centre-backs had a nightmare. Klopp needs Konate to recover quickly from this one.

    Liverpool Ratings: Defence

    Alisson Becker (6/10):

His head must have been spinning at what unfolded in front of him in the first half. Made one great save from Mbeumo.

    Trent Alexander-Arnold (5/10):

Bullied whenever Brentford got the ball forward in the first half. Recovered in the second to become prominent in an attacking sense, delivering his first league assist of the season, but he looked like he'd given up by the end.

    Ibrahima Konate (4/10):

Unlucky with the own goal but weak for Brentford's third goal. Not his day.

    Virgil van Dijk (5/10):

Done by Mbeumo's movement in move which led to first goal. Unable to prevent the set-piece chaos. Subbed at half-time.

    Kostas Tsimikas (4/10):

Terrified by Brentford's physicality, and missed a good chance at 1-0. Taken off at the break.

    Midfield

    Fabinho (5/10):

Could not do it all alone in midfield. One of the better players second half.

    Thiago Alcantara (6/10):

Tried to get on the ball and make things happen, but played his team into trouble on more than one occasion and couldn't open Brentford up in the second half.

    Harvey Elliott (4/10):

A passenger without the ball and didn't do much with it. Tough day for the teenager.

Premier League top scorers 2022-23: Erling Haaland wins the Golden Boot

GOAL brings you all this season's leading marksmen from England's top division – who will come out on top?

The race is once again on for a coveted Premier League Golden Boot, with established superstars being joined by big-money summer signings in a battle to be crowned the English top-flight's leading goal scorer.

Erling Haaland and Darwin Nunez, fresh from moves to Manchester City and Liverpool respectively, are among those to have added their particular skill sets to a collection of world-class forwards that already includes the likes of Tottenham striker Harry Kane and Anfield talisman Mohamed Salah.

With nets set to bulge on a regular basis throughout the 2022-23 campaign, GOAL is on hand to monitor the exploits of the most prolific marksmen around.

  • Getty

    1Erling Haaland | Manchester City | 36 goals

A move to England for Erling Haaland always felt like being a matter of time, and Manchester City won that particular transfer lottery in 2022. The prolific Norwegian could be the bargain of the season at £51 million, with his track record suggesting that he will have rival defenders running scared.

    2Harry Kane | Tottenham | 30 goals

A man that already has three Golden Boots to his name, Tottenham frontman Harry Kane certainly knows his way to the back of the net. The England captain has a World Cup to think about this season, but he will not allow anything to distract him from the pursuit of more goals at club level.

  • Getty

    3Ivan Toney | Brentford | 20 goals

Having hit 33 goals when helping Brentford to promotion into the Premier League, Ivan Toney backed that return up with 14 efforts last season. The powerful Bees striker is a handful for any defender in the air and on the deck, while he is also more than useful at penalties.

    4Mohamed Salah | Liverpool | 19 goals

Liverpool superstar Mohamed Salah secured himself a third Golden Boot last season – a second that has been shared with others – and more of the same is expected from him this term. With a new contract under his belt, the Egyptian forward appears set to remain the King of Anfield.

England Women's World Cup 2023 squad: Who is Sarina Wiegman taking to Australia & New Zealand?

As European champions, the Lionesses are one of the favourites for the trophy. But who is in their World Cup squad?

England will be one of the favourites to win this summer's Women's World Cup after triumphing at the Euros in 2022, beating Germany to lift their first major international title in front of a home crowd at Wembley.

It was a second successive triumph for head coach Sarina Wiegman, who lifted the same trophy with her native Netherlands in 2017. Two years after that, she led the country to a World Cup final.

Can she repeat the trick? The Lionesses will certainly believe they can help her to do as much – and even go one further – such is the confidence that Euros victory has given them.

With Ellen White and Jill Scott (now Queen of the Jungle as well as a champion of Europe) retiring after that success, there will be a few changes to the team Wiegman calls upon for this tournament.

But who has made her 23-player World Cup squad? GOAL takes a look…

  • Getty

    GOALKEEPERS

Mary Earps is England's No.1 goalkeeper and it is unlikely that will change before this summer's World Cup.

Ellie Roebuck will be Earps' back up while Aston Villa's Hannah Hampton has beaten out competition from Emily Ramsey to claim the third spot.

Despite being part of the Euros squad last summer, Hampton missed out on several squads during the 2022-23 season, with Wiegman citing "personal issues" as the reason. However, she returned in April and kept her place when the final World Cup squad was announced in late May.

    DEFENDERS

England were dealt an absolutely massive blow heading into the World Cup when captain Leah Williamson was ruled out with an ACL injury in April.

It is likely to mean that Alex Greenwood slots in at centre-back alongside Millie Bright, who takes the armband. Lucy Bronze will start on the right, while the versatile trio of Jess Carter, Esme Morgan and Niamh Charles compete for the left-back role.

Lotte Wubben-Moy will provide cover in the centre-back positions, with Carter and Morgan also capable of playing in the heart of defence.

    MIDFIELDERS

Keira Walsh, Georgia Stanway and Ella Toone will make up Wiegman's first choice midfield this summer, with Fran Kirby unfortunately ruled out of the tournament through injury.

The midfield group is then completed by three players who did not go to the Euros last summer. Jordan Nobbs is in, a January switch to Aston Villa paying dividends, while Manchester United captain Katie Zelem and Manchester City star Laura Coombs both get ready for their first major tournaments.

Coombs won her first call-up since late 2020, and her first cap in eight years, back in February.

    FORWARDS

There's a lot of competition for the starting centre forward role in this squad, with Alessia Russo, Rachel Daly and Beth England all set to battle for the position.

Russo has been the Lionesses' first choice since last summer but both Daly and England have shown incredible form this past season. Daly netted 22 goals in 22 Women's Super League games to equal Vivianne Miedema's record and win the Golden Boot. England, meanwhile, scored 12 in 12 after a January switch to Tottenham, giving her a surprising but well-deserved call-up for the World Cup.

There are plenty of options out wide, too. Chloe Kelly and Lauren Hemp are likely to be the wingers in Wiegman's starting XI, but Lauren James and Katie Robinson will both work hard to give the coach a real selection headache.

  • 1WHAT HAPPENED?

The France international winger is heading for the exits at Camp Nou, with a €50 million (£43m/$55m) agreement set to take him back to his homeland. PSG are in the market for more attacking talent after bidding farewell to Lionel Messi and seeing Kylian Mbappe spark a long-running exit saga.

    2THE BIGGER PICTURE

According to , the Ligue 1 champions were prepared to part with another forward in order to sweeten a deal with Barca for Dembele. It is claimed that Neymar was offered to the Liga title holders on a season-long loan, with the Brazil international having previously pushed for a return to Catalunya.

  • 3AND WHAT'S MORE

That offer has, however, been snubbed. Barca have no desire to welcome Neymar back into their ranks as his salary would cause them more problems amid a period of financial difficulty, while he is no longer the match-altering talent that he once was as an injury-prone 31-year-old.

Neymar spent four years at Barcelona between 2013 and 2017, scoring 105 goals and claiming a number of major honours alongside Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez. He left for Paris in a record-breaking €222m (£192m/$243m), but has found the going tough in France at times and has been linked with clubs across Europe in the current window.

Ansu Fati's last chance? Barcelona starlet must prove himself quickly or he'll be sold to make room for wonderkid Lamine Yamal

Ansu Fati has until the end of the summer transfer window to prove that he can be a long-term option for his boyhood club

Last March, Ansu Fati's dad, Bori, got on the phone with Spanish radio show to complain about his son's relationship with the club. His grievances were all centred around one singular issue: in his opinion, his son wasn't playing enough. Consequently, Bori had advised his son to leave the club – and speculated that even Real Madrid could be a possible destination.

His outburst dragged Barcelona into yet another public relations saga about their oft-injured forward. Ansu Fati was once the next 'New Messi', a presumptive fixture in the Barca lineup for years to come. He scored more goals in his breakout season than Messi managed in first full campaign in Catalunya. He broke a handful of records set by the Argentine. Throw in the fact that Fati was another La Masia graduate, right when Messi seemed to be on the decline, and the excitement was palpable.

However, a series of injuries, and ensuing inconsistency on the pitch, have seen Fati fail to live up to the promise of his youth. And now, he finds himself at a critical juncture. Fati has recaptured some of his best form since his father's outbursts, and a solid pre-season suggests that he still has a lot to give.

But he might not get the chance. Another, arguably better, teenager has emerged and with the Blaugrana needing to raise money to fund more summer transfer activity, Xavi himself admitted that Fati could be on his way out.

So, Fati effectively has two weeks to save his Barcelona career, and prove that there's still a player in there, one that was once hailed as having the potential to be the best in the world.

A glowing start to his career

Fati set expectations from his first goal alone. It was a pretty thing, the then-16-year-old ghosting across the box, and rising above an Osasuna player to flick an angled cross into the far corner. More moments followed over the course of that forgettable 2019-20 season for Barca. Fati scored seven and assisted one, averaging 0.6 goals per 90 minutes in 24 appearances. His game time was carefully managed by then-coach Ronald Koeman, but he played enough to show what he could do.

Even more exciting was his emerging relationship with Messi. The two appeared to have a crucial understanding on the pitch, the Argentine setting up arguably Fati's most impressive goal of the year with a dink over two defenders.

There was perhaps an element of overexcitement here. Fati, after all, was a teenager playing for Barcelona. He was their youngest goalscorer ever, a La Masia graduate, and the shining light in an otherwise miserable campaign. It is often the case that youngsters draw the spotlight when big teams go through lulls. Messi, at the time, was struggling (he scored 25 league goals that year.) Barcelona needed something to cling on to, and in Fati, they had found Messi's heir.

Of course, things have never really panned out that way. Fati tore his meniscus midway through his second season in Catalunya, and endured three surgeries by the age of 19. When he was finally fully fit, in August 2022, Barcelona had effectively replaced him. Robert Lewandowski, Ousmane Dembele, Raphinha, Memphis Depay and Ferran Torres all appeared to be above him in Xavi's pecking order. Ansu's Barca career was over, it seemed.

    Last year's Fati revival

Then, last season, Fati did something interesting: he started to score goals again. Xavi gently increased his minutes, tasking the 20-year-old with a larger role off the bench, and handing him the occasional start. Fati, in return, found something resembling form. He got into the right areas more often, and was more clinical in front of goal than in his sparing spells of fitness in the years since his breakout.

The result was seven goals in La Liga – his best return in four years. He added a further three assists, all while playing the most minutes of his career. And, perhaps most importantly, Fati avoided a major injury. Xavi, in turn, was full of praise for Fati.

He expressed his "confidence and total faith" in the player, and rewarded his improved showings with a start in a crucial Liga clash with Atletico Madrid in early January. These are perhaps standard things, a manager rewarding his striker for scoring goals. But for a player whose career seemed to be fading away, they were significant.

It was, in fact, strange that his father would criticise Xavi when he did. His tirade came in the middle of an extended spell of playing time for Fati, a period where the Spaniard was just recapturing his form. By the end of the season, Fati appeared to have done enough to salvage his career. A Spain call-up followed, and although his name cropped up in the back page transfer rumours every now and then, Raphinha seemed the more likely of Barca's wingers to be sold.

A valuable asset for a broke club

Things have changed since then. There was an assumption around Barcelona that they would be able to make some financial moves this summer without needing a major clearout. La Liga had already accepted their 'financial viability plan' to bring Lionel Messi back to the club, while president Joan Laporta had assured fans that new signings were on the way. Throw in the activation of one more 'lever' – a sale of a large chunk of digital content provider Barca Vision to bring in €120 million (£104m/$131m) – and everything seemed set up nicely.

Barca, of course, didn't sign Messi. Meanwhile, they have operated on the cheap, bringing in free agents and spending minimally on Oriol Romeu. So, with two weeks remaining in the transfer window, no further levers available, and ambitions to further strengthen the squad, outgoings seem likely. And Fati is reportedly top of the list.

Xavi has conceded that the forward may leave. Interest from the Premier League has only fueled that speculation. has reported that Arsenal are in for Fati, with Mikel Arteta hoping to add more firepower to his front line – and offer valuable cover for Bukayo Saka. It is unclear how much Fati will fetch Xavi's side.

However, at just 20, with four years still left on his contract, Fati could command a handsome fee. And for a club needing an injection of cash to pursue further signings – namely Man City's Joao Cancelo – moving him on might be the correct, if rather ruthless, decision.

Why Lamine Yamal is such a threat

The situation is perhaps made easier by the cover available to Barca in the forward line. While Ferran Torres appears to be much improved, and Ez Abde has shown flashes, another La Masia product seems ready to come into the fold. There has been hype around Lamine Yamal for some time now. The winger was called up to first team training in September 2022, shortly after his 15th birthday.

But, according to, the plan was to shield him from the spotlight, and allow Yamal to play with Barcelona Atletic, the club's second team, for much of the season. There was always the chance of the occasional appearance in the Copa del Rey, but the reserve side seemed a perfect option for at least a few months.

However, when Dembele left, Yamal was forced into action. And his performance in the Joan Gamper trophy – a 10-minute cameo that proved influential in Barcelona turning a 2-1 deficit into a 4-2 win – made him impossible to ignore.

He, accordingly, appeared in Barca's La Liga opener, and created arguably their best chance of the game- one that, in a cruel twist of fate, Fati failed to convert. Ironically, though, it has created something of a problem for Xavi.

Yamal is not, and can never be, the new Messi. Fati, of all people, knows that it's improbable. But he is, at this point, too good to ignore – and being blocked by another youngster who drew the same praise at a similar age.
