Leeds ‘confident’ of signing De Paul

Leeds United are reportedly ‘confident’ of signing Rodrigo de Paul in the summer transfer window, in what could potentially be a club-record deal.

The Lowdown: Constant interest in De Paul

The Whites have been linked with a move for the Udinese midfielder endless times in the last year, with a deal almost coming to fruition back in October.

De Paul may have stayed put in Italy for the time being, but he continues to be tipped to head to Elland Road, with Liverpool also rumoured to be interested in signing him.

The Latest: Leeds ‘confident’ of deal happening

According to the Football Insider, there is growing belief from United sources that Leeds will get a deal for De Paul over the line, with Udinese demanding £37million for his services.

Should the Whites match that amount, it would make the Argentine the club’s most expensive signing in history, with Rodrigo (£27m) currently topping the pile.

The report does state that Udinese could be happy to let De Paul leave for £30million, however, acting as a boost for the Whites.

The Verdict: Ideal summer signing

Marcelo Bielsa doesn’t need to make major changes to his squad this summer, but a sprinkling of stardust is required to make Leeds even more formidable.

De Paul could be just that, enjoying 17 goal involvements in Serie A this season – eight goals and eight assists apiece – and playing an average of 2.4 key passes per game.

That’s more than any Leeds player in the Premier League in 2020/21, with Raphinha (2.1) having the most, highlighting the midfield creativity he could bring to the side.

Tikolo's Blaze Helped to Tumble Biman at The Ground

Mohammedan won a match that was presumed after their batting session when the side piled up a total which was near to three hundred and fifty and the hero in unquestionably Steve Tikolo

Shahryar Khan28-Apr-2001Mohammedan won a match that was presumed after their batting session when the side piled up a total which was near to three hundred and fifty and the hero in unquestionably Steve Tikolo.Winning the toss and put Mohammedan into bat was a decision which Biman will regret for long. Had they been aware of that the pitch will speak for Steve Tikolo in such a scope, they must have altered the election to field first. Biman player’s jubilation continued to fade away as the third wicket took the tally up to 193 where Parvez Ahmed who won the streak of half-centuries since last three matches, contributed 79 before he was caught at gully. After that Tikolo was the one who stole the day as well as the spectator’s loud plaudit for his relentless effort to clean the rope in almost every over. His innings of 185 ( the second highest after Michel Bevan made 186 in a exhibition match here) comprised of 18 fours and 4 substantial sixes. There was little to do for the Biman bowlers except watching the ravage with fixed gaze. At last Khaled Mahmood got him with the assistance of Manzoor Akhter when things all went in Mohammedan’s favor as the score put on view of gigantic 339 runs. They ended with 344 for the loss of 7 wickets. All the Biman bowlers had to be lavish because of tempestuous Tikolo; of them Khaled Mahmood pan put to buy two for 73.Chasing a total of 345 as a winning target should have despoiled all the confidence and the skills a side has, but Biman set off to opt for assault from the very proceeding. Athar Ali, the veteran stylish batsman of the side initiated to slash the Mohammedan seamers all over the stump. Even three lose of wickets in quick succession could not hamper his onslaught. Biman’s hopes were dashed off when Majid Sayed found his stumps disarrayed of Tikolo when he tried to play him down the wicket. The series of failures of middle order native batsmen dismayed Athar’s effort and he was on his stride becoming the victim of a wretched run-out. At that stage Biman was just a little more than one-hundred and fifty for six. The match ended with Mohammedan’s victory of 108 runs over their rivals who are closest in terms of points.

Valery’s Southampton days could be numbered

Yan Valery’s season has certainly not gone to plan, with the young right-back shipped out on loan to Birmingham City in the January transfer window, where he has struggled to impress.

The defender lost his regular spot in Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side when Kyle Walker-Peters first arrived on loan from Tottenham Hotspur in January 2020 and once his transfer to St Mary’s was made permanent, it was always going to be a struggle for Valery to get regular game time at Southampton.

The 22-year-old, who was labelled a “weak link” by Athletic journalist Dan Sheldon, made just one start in the Premier League for the Saints, which came in a 3-1 defeat against Arsenal where he was regularly exposed, so it was perhaps no surprise to see him turfed out on loan, despite the lack of back-up to Walker-Peters at the South Coast club.

When the former Spurs man was injured, we saw the likes of Moussa Djenepo, James Ward-Prowse and Jan Bednarek all feature at right-back, which certainly suggests that Valery wasn’t held particularly high regard by Hasenhuttl.

During his time with Birmingham City, who until recently looked in real danger of relegation this season, Valery has made just seven appearances in the Championship, of which just two have been starts, which again, doesn’t bode particularly well for his future at Southampton.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/latest-southampton-news%2c-transfer-rumours-and-more” title=“Latest Southampton news, transfer rumours and more!“]

Hasenhuttl spoke recently about the development of some of the players out on loan, saying:

“Some have done well, a lot of them did not even play in the Championship or League One, so you can see how difficult it is for them that they don’t even there perform well,” Hasenhuttl has openly admitted.

“We have a few loan players that are coming back. The way back is not easy for them. That means we have to look for new options.”

The Austrian certainly seems to be hinting that it is going to be difficult for Valery to re-establish himself in his side in the future after a disappointing couple of seasons, so perhaps we will see him depart St Mary’s on a permanent deal this summer.

Certainly, if Southampton bring in the full-backs they are seemingly in the market for ahead of next season, there will be little room left for Valery in Hasenhuttl’s side in the future.

Notts bat through day for maximum batting points

With more than 300 overs lost on the first three days, Nottinghamshire just used the final day of their match against Warwickshire for some batting practice and to pick up some valuable bonus points

Dave Bracegirdle19-May-2001With more than 300 overs lost on the first three days, Nottinghamshire just used the final day of their match against Warwickshire for some batting practice and to pick up some valuable bonus points.Darren Bicknell and Greg Blewett began the day with the score on 41–1 and the pair were still together at lunch, having extended the total to 159–1, with the Australian on 80 not out and his partner safely past his own half-century.The Warwickshire bowlers toiled away in search of success but were surprised at the manner in which they eventually got it. Blewett, who had again batted superbly, had reached 99 before trying to cut a widish delivery from Mo Sheikh and bottom–edged it on to his off stump. Notts’ second-wicket partnership had been worth 173.Bicknell though, made sure of his hundred by turning Alan Richardson for a single (219 balls 15x4s). The Bears were again rocked by another sizeable stand as Usman Afzaal began to demonstrate his touch and timing.Afzaal had a slight scare when a mistimed hook off Sheikh landed between the fielders but there were no further alarms as he progressed to a very fluent 50 (95 balls 8x4s). His stand with Bicknell was worth 151 but a tired–looking drive cost Afzaal his wicket, spooning the ball to Nick Knight in the covers off Neil Smith’s right arm off–spin.Paul Johnson only made six before he also fell to Smith, superbly caught at mid-wicket by the tumbling Michael Powell. Bicknell though, was not to be denied. A straight six off Smith and 19 boundaries took him to his 150 as Notts pushed on towards maximum batting points.Kevin Pietersen made a quickfire eleven but became Smith’s third victim with a sliced slog which flew to Mel Betts at deep backward point.Bicknell’s highest score for Notts had been his 180 not out at Edgbaston last season and he was within 13 runs of equalling it when he fell to Vasbert Drakes.Warwickshire took the new ball at 100 overs and Drakes bowled a no–ball with his first attempt but the next delivery took an outside edge and flashed to second slip where Dominic Ostler took a good catch above his head. With three overs of the day’s play remaining Notts reached their 400 target for the maximum batting points. As the players trooped off, thoughts turned to the two forthcoming matches between the sides, Sunday in the National League and on Wednesday in the B&H quarter-finals.

Celtic: Whelan urges Leeds to make Edouard move

Former Leeds United striker and now Football Insider pundit Noel Whelan has urged the Whites to make a move for Celtic striker Odsonne Edouard.

The Lowdown: Edouard set for exit

It seems as if Edouard has now played his final game for the Hoops. The Frenchman started in the club’s final game of the season against Hibernian on Saturday, with the Easter Road clash ending in a stalemate.

Reports in recent months have suggested that the 23-year-old wants to leave Celtic Park this summer, regardless of who comes in to replace Neil Lennon. Leicester City are reportedly confident of securing Edouard’s services, but Whelan wants Leeds to make their move over the coming months.

The Latest: Whelan urges Leeds to make move

According to Football Insider, Leeds are putting plans in place to sign a new, young striker and have set aside £20m-25m to bolster their attacking ranks.

Speaking to Football Insider about the subject, Whelan staked his claim for Edouard, who Lennon described as ‘magnificent’ earlier this season. The 46-year-old said:

“We’ve got to look long term here.

“You want someone you can improve, can grow into the side, grow into the football club and be there for three to four seasons. There’s already a player out there – Edouard.

“I keep saying it, go get him. He’s at Celtic. He fits that mould, he’d be competition. There’s many, many clubs interested in him, why shouldn’t we be? You can get him at a really good price.

“We’ve got to start looking at other people. Can we take away the players that other teams are trying to get?

“Victor Orta’s not failed us yet. What we do need is that striker. That’s the right criteria that we need to bring into the football club.”

The Verdict: Hoops need a proven replacement

With Edouard seemingly on his way out of Parkhead, we feel it is pivotal that Celtic bring in a proven replacement this summer. The Frenchman has netted 57 Scottish Premiership goals in 100 appearances, with 16 of those coming in the current campaign.

Mohamed Elyounoussi is the only other Hoops player to net double figures this season in all competitions, and he’s set to return to Southampton over the coming weeks.

Immediate firepower seems to be what is required under the new manager, so it looks set to be a crucial summer window for new Celtic CEO Dominic McKay.

Barnett and Taylor bat Gloucestershire into control against Notts

Thanks to centuries from Kim Barnett and Chris Taylor, Gloucestershire batted themselves into a dominant position on the first day of their Championship match against Notts at Trent Bridge

Dave Bracegirdle06-Jun-2001Thanks to centuries from Kim Barnett and Chris Taylor, Gloucestershire batted themselves into a dominant position on the first day of their Championship match against Notts at Trent Bridge. When bad light halted play half-an-hour early Taylor was unbeaten on 152 and Gloucs were on 356–5.Wayward early bowling enabled the visitors, who had won the toss and elected to bat first, to get off to a healthy start with 83 runs coming inside the first 20 overs. Notts then trapped Dominic Hewson lbw for 36 and sent Matt Windows back without scoring, but Kim Barnett batted superbly, feeding on anything short or wide, to reach lunch on 75 not out.Barnett batted in the same vein after the interval and completed a fine century (193 mins, 145 balls, 19×4) before steering the ball to Greg Blewett at slip off the bowling of Greg Smith.Taylor dominated the remainder of the afternoon session, reaching his own hundred just before tea (157 mins 149 balls l7x4) by hitting Usman Afzaal for consecutive boundaries. Of the 162 runs scored in the session Taylor had hit exactly 100 of them.Notts responded with a wicket immediately upon the resumption. Mark Alleyne tamely chipped Harris straight into the waiting hands of Darren Bicknell at mid on.Taylor pushed a single to bring the 300 up in the 80th over but then saw his new partner Jeremy Snape smartly caught by a diving Blewett at slip. Jack Russell, playing his first game of the summer after a back injury, got off the mark first ball and helped take the total past 350.With just eight overs of the day remaining Gareth Clough’s short–pitched delivery was pulled away by Taylor for the four needed to take him past 150 (253 mins 218 balls 23×4).

WHU fans livid at Lanzini snub

Many West Ham United fans were livid after Manuel Lanzini was overlooked for Match of the Day’s Goal of the Season award.

The 2020/21 Premier League season came to an end on Sunday as the Hammers secured Europa League qualification in style with a 3-0 win over Southampton. It was the perfect way to end the campaign in front of fans at the London Stadium, and David Moyes and his players deserve all the praise they get.

One of the moments of the Irons’ season was Lanzini’s stunning goal in a 3-3 draw away at Spurs in October. Not only did it cap a last-minute late comeback from 3-0 down, it was an absolutely fantastic strike which really should have been a shoo-in for the Goal of the Season award. However, while the £9m-valued man’s (Transfermarkt) effort was nominated, it missed out to Erik Lamela’s rabona finish against Arsenal.

The winner was revealed on Match of the Day’s official Twitter account, and it attracted plenty of attention from West Ham supporters. These fans took to the social media platform to share their thoughts on the MOTD pundits’ decision.

Let’s see what the fans had to say as Lanzini was snubbed

Leewards sink Barbados' hopes

Barbados suffered their second successive defeat in the 2002 Regional Under-15 Cricket Competition when they were beaten by the Leeward Islands in a low-scoring match at the Queen’s Park Oval yesterday

Louis Holder03-Apr-2002Barbados suffered their second successive defeat in the 2002 Regional Under-15 Cricket Competition when they were beaten by the Leeward Islands in a low-scoring match at the Queen’s Park Oval yesterday. It was a game they had to win to remain in contention for the title, but they lost by two wickets in a match that went down to the wire. The Leewards made what seemed to be a small target of 95 look like a mountain but just managed to scrape home.Openers captain Javia Liburd and Delon Skellekie put on 25 for the first wicket but the team slipped to 64 for six and then 91 for eight.Barbados’ bowlers, none moreso than the tireless Javon Searles, fought gallantly. At 84 for six, it seemed all over for Barbados, but Searles, a tall, lively fast bowling all-rounder with a level head and full of enthusiasm, returned to the attack and accounted for two wickets. It was not enough, however.Earlier, Barbados, who won the toss on a good batting pitch, were skittled out for 94 with Searles top-scoring with 24. Kerwin Elias, one of three changes to the team, made 16.Pacer Justin Athanaze, with three for 22, off-spinner Jacques Taylor (three for 27) and fast bowler Shaheed Walwyn (two for 26) did the damage for the Leewards.Barbados will oppose two-time defending champions Trinidad and Tobago today.

Tyler Roberts tipped to leave Leeds

Former Sunderland striker Kevin Phillips believes that Tyler Roberts could leave Leeds United this summer in order to find regular first-team football.

The Lowdown: Limited playing time

The Whites may have enjoyed a memorable season back in the Premier League, securing a ninth-place finish, but Roberts hasn’t been a key presence in Marcelo Bielsa’s side.

The Welsh forward started just 14 of Leeds’ 38 league games, often having to play second fiddle to more important attackers, such as Raphinha and Jack Harrison.

Roberts has been linked with a summer exit from Elland Road as he potentially seeks to move to a club where he will start most weeks.

The Latest: Pundit tips Roberts to leave

Speaking to Football Insider, Phillips admitted that he could see the £4.5m-rated talent moving on to pastures new in the next transfer window. He said of the 22-year-old:

“I want to see young players playing. I’ve said that all along. He’s had some minutes this year but when you’ve had that, you want to be playing first team football.

“Once you’ve had that taste. If you aren’t guaranteed that at your club then you want to go somewhere else.  Naturally, when know you can perform at the Premier League level you want to play every week and develop.

“That’s one we’ll be reading about over summer whether he goes out on loan or whatever. Him going would not be a surprise.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-3/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Keep hold of him, Leeds

While Robertson may not be an indispensable figure at Leeds, he is still a valuable squad member, with his former West Brom boss Tony Pulis once describing him as ‘very talented’.

At 22, he is at an age where he is still maturing, and under the tutelage of Bielsa, there is no reason why he can’t become a regular starter for the Whites over time.

That being said, if Roberts is already desperate to be a vital presence elsewhere, it will be hard to begrudge him a summer move, with Leeds receiving a fee for his services rather than risking losing him for free when his contract expires next year.
